Why Photo Booth Prices Vary So Much in Australia
Ask three photo booth businesses to quote the same four-hour event and you can easily get wildly different numbers. It’s one of the most confusing parts of planning an event, because on the surface it looks like you’re comparing the same thing. You’re usually not. Here’s what sits behind the price.
What you’re actually paying for
A photo booth quote is really four things bundled together: the gear, the time, the people, and the consumables. Businesses weight these differently, which is where most of the spread comes from.
The camera and lighting
This is the single biggest driver of quality and cost. At the budget end, a booth is often an iPad or a webcam with a ring light. It works, and for a casual party it might be all you need. At the other end, you have a proper DSLR behind a studio flash, which is what makes photos look like they came from a photographer rather than a phone.
Shutter Share’s Snap Booth uses a Canon DSLR camera with a studio flash and a modelling light. It costs more to buy and more to insure, and that’s reflected in what any operator charges for it. Lighting is the thing that separates a nice photo from a forgettable one.
Setup, pack-down and travel
Most businesses quote you for the hours the booth is running, but they’re on site for two or so hours longer than that. Some build the setup time into the hourly rate, which makes their hourly look high. Others charge a separate setup fee, which makes their hourly look low. Same total, different presentation.
Travel is the other quiet variable. A booth that needs to be driven an hour each way costs more to deliver, and how that’s charged varies enormously. Some businesses absorb it, some add a flat regional fee, some charge per kilometre.
Whether someone stays with the booth
An attended booth means a person is there the whole time, encouraging shy guests and making sure the queue moves. An unattended booth is still delivered, set up and collected, but having no attendant makes it cheaper, and is genuinely fine for a lot of events. Modern photo booths like Shutter Share’s use a touch screen interface and guests tend to work them out in seconds.
The extras
This is where quotes diverge most. Backdrops, custom digital frames, a guestbook, printing - some businesses include them, some charge for each one. The benefit of choosing a booth business that offers add-ons means that you can tailor the booth experience to your event, and your budget.
How printing changes the maths
Printing is the clearest example of why two quotes can look so different.
Digital photo booths cost the same whether ten people use the booth or two hundred. Once the booth is set up, every extra photo is free. That’s why digital-only hire can offer unlimited sessions without flinching.
Prints don’t work like that. Every print consumes paper and ink, and the printer itself is another piece of hardware that the booth business needs to buy, transport and keep running. A busy booth at a 100-person event can go through dozens to hundreds of prints. That’s a real cost, and it scales with how much fun everyone is having.
So printing is almost always priced separately, and usually per pack rather than per print. Our booth printer hire is $200 per pack, which covers 150 lab-quality 4×6” prints. If you expect heavy use, you can add another pack, rather than getting an open-ended bill afterwards.
Questions worth asking any business
Whoever you end up booking, these five questions will explain most of the gap between two quotes:
- What camera and lighting does the booth use? DSLR and studio flash, or a tablet and a ring light?
- Is setup and pack-down inside the hire time, or on top of it?
- Is someone staying with the booth?
- What’s included, and what’s an add-on? Backdrop, props, frames, gallery, guestbook, etc.
- If prints are included, how many and what happens when they run out?
Cheap isn’t automatically bad and expensive isn’t automatically good. But once you can see what each business has put in and what it’s left out, the spread starts making sense.
