Cooma is the largest town on the Monaro, sitting roughly 115 kilometres south of Canberra where the Monaro Highway meets the Snowy Mountains Highway. It is the commercial centre for the whole Snowy Monaro district and the traditional gateway to the snowfields, which gives its events calendar a rhythm you won't find closer to the capital — a busy winter driven by the mountains, and a spring and summer of local weddings, milestone birthdays, and community celebrations.

The town carries the history of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, and the waves of migration that came with it, in its streetscape and its community groups. The heritage buildings along Lambie Street, Centennial Park and its avenue of flags, and the strong club culture that grew up around the Scheme all shape the way Cooma celebrates. Cooma Bowling Club is the main function venue in town, with a bistro, a bar that can be staffed for private events, and greens that make barefoot bowls an easy addition to a Christmas party or group booking.
