The Technology Behind Shutter Share's Photo Booth Experience
When evaluating photo booth options, the underlying technology matters more than many people realise. The interface, camera, lighting, and network all drive image quality and guest experience.
Our Snap Booth uses purpose-selected components designed for reliability and performance. Here’s what we’ve chosen and why.
iPad Interface
Our booth uses an iPad as the primary user interface rather than a PC-based system. This provides several practical advantages:
- Familiar touch interactions — most guests are already comfortable with tablet interfaces from their own devices
- Responsive multi-touch — gestures work smoothly without the lag common in resistive touchscreens, making it easy for guests to add digital stickers and customise their photos
- Minimal hardware footprint — no external keyboard, mouse, or visible desktop tower
- Broad usability — the interface is accessible to guests across different age groups and technical abilities
- iOS operating platform - Chosen for its reliability during extended operation.
Many photo booth providers use PC-based systems with touchscreens that rely on mouse emulation, which can feel less responsive and require more deliberate input.
Network Infrastructure
Reliable photo delivery requires robust network connectivity. Shutter Share’s quality setup includes cellular 4G internet — we provide our own connection rather than relying solely on venue networks. Because of the booth’s independent oepration, functionality isn’t dependent on venue network congestion. However, if cellular reception is poor, we can also connect to the venue’s network. Shutter Share’s iPad setup additionally supports built-in AirDrop for person-to-person sharing with other Apple devices.
DSLR Camera System
Shutter Share’s booth uses a professional DSLR camera rather than a webcam or integrated tablet camera. This means images are suitable for both digital sharing and physical printing and produces cleaner images in dim environments without excessive noise. Shutter Share’s quality photo booth setup also produces more natural skin tones compared to consumer-grade cameras. The result is professional-quality photos wrapped up in a fun photo booth experience.
High-quality photo prints
For events where guests want physical keepsakes, we offer a professional dye-sublimation photo printer as an add-on. This is the same technology used by professional photo labs and produces continuous-tone images without visible dots or banding. Prints are water-resistant and fade-resistant, lasting for decades under normal conditions. Shutter Share’s professional photo printer produces tangible memories guests can take home, rather than waiting for online delivery or lab processing, and pairs well with instant image sharing via QR code, email and SMS.
Studio Flash and Lighting
Camera quality alone doesn’t determine final image quality — controlled lighting is equally important. Shutter Share’s booth uses professional studio flash and lighting equipment so that every photo receives the same level of illumination regardless of conditions. The soft lighting reduces harsh shadows and minimises skin texture emphasis
- Colour-correct output — neutralises venue lighting colour casts that can affect skin tones
- Enables lower ISO — the camera can use optimal sensor settings, reducing digital noise
We’ve discussed lighting considerations in more detail in our previous article about photo booth lighting. The practical effect is more consistent, flattering results compared to ambient-light-only photo booths.
Quality Assurance
Professional equipment requires professional maintenance and testing procedures:
- Pre-event checklist — every booth is tested against a comprehensive checklist before deployment to ensure all systems are functioning correctly
- Regular maintenance schedules — equipment undergoes scheduled maintenance and calibration to maintain optimal performance
- System validation — camera settings, lighting output, network connectivity, and print quality are verified before each event
This systematic approach minimises the risk of technical issues and ensures consistent performance.
