Canberra Glassworks occupies the old Kingston Powerhouse, the oldest public building in the city, and turns it into something few venues can match: a working glass studio with soaring industrial interiors, exposed brick and the heat and drama of furnaces at one end of the room. It is the only public access glass centre in Australia.
The building is available for functions, and the obvious thing to do with it is to add a glassblowing demonstration — guests watch molten glass worked in front of them, and commissioned pieces can be arranged as gifts or awards. The scale of the space suits cocktail receptions and corporate events more than formal sit-down dinners, and the surrounding Kingston Foreshore precinct means guests have somewhere to go before and after. Studios and exhibition galleries sit alongside the event spaces.
