National Library of Australia

The National Library of Australia is one of Canberra’s landmark buildings — a colonnaded marble pavilion on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin, in the Parliamentary Triangle alongside Questacon and the National Gallery. Its spaces carry the weight of the collection they sit inside, which makes them a natural fit for book launches, exhibition openings, lectures, award nights and partnership events.

Hire works differently here than at most venues. Spaces are available by application only, and the Library assesses each request on its cultural, community or public benefit, its value as a partnership, its operational suitability for a national research library, and how it supports the Library’s engagement, cultural or educational role. That rules out most private celebrations, but it is a strong option for organisations whose event has a genuine cultural or civic purpose.

Proposals need a minimum of twelve weeks’ notice so there is time to assess, approve and plan, and they go to the Library’s venue hire team by email. If your event clears that bar, the setting is hard to beat: lake and Parliament House views, an unmistakable address and one of the country’s great collections as the backdrop.
